Manager of Armour and Company, says the assured

growth of Roanoke prompted the re-location to
Third Street and Bullitt Avenue of the facility.

The move from 311 Campbell Avenue was necessitated by
right-of-way clearing for Spur Route 581, a connector
to Interstate 81. The two-story structure has
22 thousand square feet of floor space -- on two
levels -- as opposed to the former four-story layout in
a 40-year old building. The new plant features insulated interior walls and ceilings and the entire operation is under constant refrigeration. Among the new machines is the latest Alkar stainless steel
smokehouse, completely automatic, which modernizes a
formerly time-consuming operation and keeps a record

of its own operations. The common frankfurter starts
its journey through a maze of machines as a sixty-foot
sausage, is smoked in company with 1500 pounds of meat, packaged -- as are all other products at the local, plant -- and sent to market. All meats prosessed at the
plant are shipped in by refrigerated railway cars. City
and Chamber of Commerce officials will be present for
Armour's grand opening on Wednesday.
